Our Memory of Vicky, from New Zealand

Created by Amanda 2 years ago

Our family met Vicky in March 2020.  This is our story and memory of Vicky.

We left New Zealand at the beginning of December 2019 and began a seven month journey through Europe and the UK.

Just south of Madrid Covid 19 was beginning to close parts of Spain, and we decided heading across the border into France was necessary.  However after only 24 hours here, it was clear that things were getting worse around the world, and that we needed to get to the UK where we had support of family and friends should we need it.

On March 17th after arriving in England via Eurotunnel, we drove off the train and headed for Berkeley.  As we navigated the country lane with our caravan in tow, we arrived at Meadowlea very late that night. Two days later we were in lockdown.

Little did we know we would spend the next four months here with our good friends Chris and Charmyn Hall.

We were met Vicky early on, as our home on wheels was parked opposite her house.  It was such a pleasure to see and chat to her almost daily as she was sheltering from Covid given her past health concerns.  Many chats were had at her gate about her life and our journey. Given the strange times we all found ourselves in isolating, it was lovely to connect regularly with Vicky and just chat, sometimes about not much!

Devastated to hear that the cancer had returned, we were only too happy to do whatever we could to help, and to assist Chris and Charmyn support Vicky where we could with meals, shopping and the like.

Leaving Berkeley for the last time on July 4th 2020 was an emotional time for us all. Knowing Vicky's prognosis wasn't good was very hard. There was a bond that had been created which we didn't think possible after such a short period of time.

We kept Vicky updated on our journey through England and Scotland before we were able to secure flights to return to New Zealand on September 1st.  Since then we had kept in contact via email which has been so lovely.

Kate, it was lovely to also meet you at Vicky's, and we thank you for sending us the details of this page.  We think of Vicky regularly, and she will always be a big part of our memory during our time in England.

Sending love to you all at this time.
